In Conversation with Ajay Anil Babu

Q1) Tell us since when did you start writing and tell us about your first writing experience .

Ans : I came into the world of writing when I was studying in Class 5. From my childhood days, I was a keen reader and used to read many story books. And I would visualise the characters and think differently with my own stories. But it was when in Class 5, I penned down my first short story. From then on, I wrote many short stories in my personal diary.

My interest in visualising stories with strong characters grew in the coming years and wrote many stories of different genres. But it was during my college days, I took a serious interest in writing and ended up writing my first novel.

Q2) How did you come up with the Plot of the book “The Queen of Times  – The Inception”?

Ans : It was my long time dream to write a novel. I tried many plots but nothing worked well. I am a person who loves historical fiction a lot. Whether it’s movies or books, I love this genre. It was during my final year, I came across the story of Razia Sultan. Her life and the events that occurred had a good plot for a fiction novel. I had a plot of friendship between a man and woman, where no love angle comes in between them. So, when both these concepts merged, it was the birth of The Queen of Times – The Inception.

Q3) Nowadays you have seen that the Youth is very rarely interested in reading books, what is your take on the topic ?

Ans : Yes, today youth is indeed rarely interested in reading. Today, there is social media and a wide range of OTT platforms to get engaged. So, they find less interest in reading books. But, reading takes us into a different world. It’s a different experience that one cannot get through social media or OTTs. And if authors like me can provide good contents that can live up to the expectations of the youth, surely they will be back into the world of books. Still, many among the youth are vivid readers. That’s only because of the good content that keeps them engaged.

Q4) How long does it take to plan out a book and execute it ? How is the entire process like?

Ans : It depends on the book genre and the story you are going to say. For me, it took about 4-5 months for me to plan and finish writing my first book, which is part of a trilogy. My book is a historical fiction and I need to research about many things such as the lifestyle, and cultural practices of that era to take my readers to that era. Now, looking forward, it may take about 18 months from now to finish the rest two books of this trilogy as more research work is needed on them. I initially write an initial draft of the story I have in my mind, after which I will read and edit it multiple times to get up a final draft which is intriguing and emotional.

Q5) You have also pointed out that you have a keen interest in music. Throw light on some of your favourite song or favorite track .

Ans : I love music so much. Whenever I feel distressed or if I have writer’s block, I will hear music and my mind gets relaxed. l mainly love soulful romantic tracks and bgms. Namely, my favourite song is Sirikkadey from the movie Remo.

Q6) Give one advice to the youth on how to start their career in writing.

Ans : I am have not grown enough to advise about a career in writing. I am just a beginner. But, what I believe as a writer is that trust yourself. Trust the plot you have. Believe in your way of storytelling. Don’t try to imitate others. Be yourself and trust your path. Success will come to you. Also, you should also have a second income option as you can’t become a bestseller overnight. It requires patience and a lot of effort to get it to there.
