Beat the Heat: Health Department Issues Advisory to Prevent Heat Strokes

As temperatures continue to soar across the city, the Public Health Department has issued a crucial advisory urging citizens to take proactive measures to prevent heat strokes and related illnesses.

With several parts of Maharashtra recording temperatures above 40°C, health officials are warning that extreme heat can lead to serious health risks, particularly among children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

What is Heat Stroke?
Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s temperature regulation system fails due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Symptoms include high body temperature (above 103°F), headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and unconsciousness.

Preventive Measures Recommended:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks as they can dehydrate you.

  • Wear Light Clothing: Choose light-colored, loose-fitting, and breathable clothes to help your body stay cool.

  • Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Stay indoors between 12 pm to 4 pm, when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

  • Use Protection: Always use umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses when stepping out. Apply sunscreen with high SPF to prevent sunburn.

  • Keep Cool Indoors: Use fans, coolers, or air conditioners. If not available, visit public places like libraries or malls to stay cool.

  • Eat Light: Opt for smaller, more frequent meals rich in fruits and vegetables with high water content.

In case of symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, individuals are advised to move to a cool place immediately, apply cold compresses, and seek medical attention without delay.

The department urges everyone to stay alert and take care of themselves and their loved ones as the heat intensifies.
