An Air India flight from Kochi to Mumbai overshot the runway during landing on Monday morning amid intense rainfall. Flight AI 2744, an A320 aircraft (VT-TYA), landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) at 9:27 AM and veered off the main runway (09/27) shortly after touchdown due to poor weather conditions.
Sources revealed that three tyres burst during the landing, and the aircraft’s engine may have sustained damage. Despite the incident, the aircraft safely taxied to the terminal gate, where all passengers and crew disembarked unharmed.
Air India confirmed the incident in an official statement:
“Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority.”
Emergency response teams at CSMIA were swiftly deployed. A CSMIA spokesperson added:
“An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at CSMIA, Mumbai at 09:27 hours. All passengers and crew are safe. Minor damage was reported to the airport’s main runway 09/27. To maintain operations, the secondary runway 14/32 has been activated. Safety remains our highest priority.”
Runway 09/27 is currently under inspection and repair. Flight operations are continuing via the secondary runway to minimize disruption.
