In a study by NOP World Culture Score Index among 30 major nations to determine which country’s citizens spend the most time reading, India came out on top. According to the ranking, readers in India read for an average of 10.4 hours a week, or roughly an hour and a half every day. Thailand and China are second and third on the list after India, with 9.24 hours and 8 hours, respectively.
Following with weekly readings of 7.36 hours, 7.3 hours, and 7.24 hours, respectively, are the Philippines, Egypt, and the Czech Republic. The top 10 was completed by Russia, Sweden, France, Hungary, and 6.54, 6.54, and 7.06 hours, respectively. Unexpectedly, the fixation with reading has nothing to do with literacy, as seen by the fact that European countries with excellent educational systems and high literacy rates, such as Finland, Norway, and Denmark, fail to place in the top 10.
Only two European countries, Sweden and France, which are placed eighth and ninth, respectively, and are also in the top 10, have robust educational systems. According to the 2011 census, India’s literacy rate is 74.04%, whereas the literacy rates of the other top 5 countries are 93.5% in Thailand, 95.1% in China, 95.4% in the Philippines, and 73.9% in Egypt. What therefore accounts for India’s ranking? Starting with Arvind Adiga, who also won a Man Booker Prize for the White Tiger, Indian authors have been enjoying success on a global scale. This success of Indian authors may be the cause of the much-needed improvement in the Indian publishing industry. Another factor might be how simple it is for people to access their preferred e-books via the internet. Kindle,
