It’s big breaking news. Famous cricketer, commentator, TV artist and politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has been given imprisonment of 1 year by the Supreme Court of India. The imprisonment is for the 34-year-old road rage case which was in court for so long period.
The infamous road rage incident occurred on December 27, 1988, where Sidhu was the main culprit. The prosecution had alleged that Sidhu and his aide Rupinder Singh Sandhu had parked their vehicle in the middle of a road near Patiala city’s Sheranwala Gate Crossing. A man who was driving by, along with his family asked Sidhu and Sandhu to move their vehicle, leading to a heated row.
In September 1999, a trial court had acquitted Sidhu of all charges. Reversing the verdict, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, in December 2008, held Sidhu and Sandhu guilty of homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 (II) of the Indian Penal Code and convicted them to three years in jail.
However, the Supreme Court gave a verdict of a Rs 1000 fine which was later challenged by the family of the deceased. Later today, it was proven that the road rage was one of the prime reasons for the demise and thereby Sidhu has been convicted to one year of prison.
