Vehicles were set on fire and several people were hurt, including police officers.The violence that took place in West Bengal’s Howrah district during the Ram Navami celebrations in March was the subject of an investigation order issued by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday.
A bench of acting chief judge TS Sivagnanam and justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya directed the state police to turn over the inquiry to the National inquiry Agency (NIA) after hearing a PIL brought by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker and opposition leader in the assembly Suvendu Adhikari.It further instructed the state police to send all relevant records, paperwork, and CCTV footage to the federal investigation agency for submission.On March 30, during a Ram Navami parade in Bengal’s Howrah district, there were violent skirmishes. During the Ram Navami celebrations last month, fighting between two groups broke out in Howrah’s Shibpur. Several vehicles were set on fire, stones were thrown, and shops were plundered. In the ensuing conflicts, prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPc had to be issued and internet services had to be shut down due to several injuries, including those to police officers.The Ram Navami skirmishes appear to have been organised, according to records filed by the state police, the Calcutta high court stated earlier this month. It also suggested that a central agency could be better qualified to investigate the events, which had heightened intercommunal tensions and sparked a political dispute in the eastern state.
