Javelin champion Kishore Jena, who became the first athlete from Odisha to represent India in the World Athletics Championship finals in Budapest, would receive a prize of Rs 25 lakh, according to chief minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik, who made the announcement on Monday. On Sunday’s final, Kishore came in sixth. With 84.77 meters, he set a new personal best.
According to Patnaik, Kishore’s extraordinary journey and accomplishment at the Budapest World Athletics Championship not only brought honor to the state and country but will continue to inspire many athletes for years to come.
The 27-year-old farmer’s son from Kothasahi in the Puri area had second thoughts about competing in the highlight event because his visa application was being processed slowly. Olympic gold champion Neeraj Chopra, who had won gold in the World Athletics Championship, raised the problem, which sped up the procedure.
Jena, a graduate of the Government Sports Hostel in Bhubaneswar, switched from volleyball to javelin in 2015 at the advice of his coach. He was training at the Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Center in Bhubaneswar prior to competing in the World Athletics Championship.
