Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned from his post following weeks of nationwide student protests over the alleged NEET-UG examination irregularities and paper leak controversy. The resignation marks a significant political development after sustained demonstrations demanding accountability and reforms in India’s examination system.
In a resignation letter shared on X (formerly Twitter), Pradhan stated that his decision was taken in the larger interest of students and to ensure that the ongoing controversy does not further impact their future. He wrote that he had accepted responsibility throughout the crisis and believed stepping down was necessary to restore public confidence in the education system.
The protests, led by student groups and supported by several political organizations, intensified in recent weeks after allegations of examination malpractice and paper leaks. Demonstrators demanded transparent investigations, comprehensive reforms in the examination process, and ministerial accountability. The movement witnessed large gatherings across multiple cities, making it one of the biggest youth-led agitations in recent years.
Following the announcement, celebrations were reported at several protest sites, while political leaders described the resignation as a major response to public pressure. However, protest organizers have maintained that their movement will continue until broader reforms are implemented to strengthen the integrity of competitive examinations and safeguard students’ futures.
