Following these recommendations is crucial to reducing the incidence of foot ulcers, especially in those who are more vulnerable because of illnesses like diabetes.According to the 2023 ICMR INDIA B research by the Indian Council of Medical Research, over 101 million people in India have diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes has been rising gradually in the country since 1990, with a notable spike after 2000. India is the second-most affected country in the world by the diabetes epidemic; by 2045, the number of adults over 65 who have the disease is expected to reach 27.5 million. This is because, frighteningly, 43.9 million cases of diabetes remain undiagnosed.

These sores, which frequently result in infections, are caused by the deterioration of the skin and tissues in the feet and ankles. Foot deformities, neuropathy, poor circulation, and high blood sugar can all lead to foot ulcers.
“Diabetes increases risk due to associated complications,” the doctor said. If left untreated, ulcers can develop into serious problems such as abscesses, gangrene, and infections, which frequently necessitate amputation. Risks are also increased by ailments like Raynaud’s phenomenon and atherosclerosis. On rare occasions, ulcers could call for testing for skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma. There are three primary forms of foot and ankle ulcers: lower leg venous ulcers, neurotrophic ulcers on diabetic feet, and arterial ulcers caused by poor circulation.
