Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is under scrutiny after reportedly sharing sensitive information about planned airstrikes in Yemen with a private Signal group chat that included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer, according to The New York Times. The encrypted messages allegedly included flight schedules for F/A-18 Hornets targeting Houthi positions, sent on March 15.
This marks the second Signal-related controversy involving Hegseth in recent weeks. Previously, The Atlantic revealed that its editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, was accidentally added to a Signal chat with high-level U.S. security officials discussing military operations in Yemen.
The latest leak raises further concerns about secure communication protocols at the highest levels of government. Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer Rauchet — a former Fox News producer with no official role in the Defense Department — has frequently accompanied him on overseas trips. His brother and lawyer, both affiliated with the Pentagon, were also part of the chat.
A senior official told The New York Times that the chat was informal and included close advisers before Hegseth’s confirmation, stressing that “nothing classified was ever discussed.”
Despite repeated denials from officials, the growing Signal scandals continue to raise alarms about national security and digital discretion in high office.
