With 528 votes, NDA candidate and former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar easily won the vice-presidential election on Saturday. Margaret Alva, the opposition-backed candidate for Congress, received fewer than 200 votes. Dhankhar received 74.36 percent of all valid votes. He has the largest margin of victory in the last six vice-presidential elections since 1997. Dhankhar, 71, will take over as Rajya Sabha chairman after current M Venkaiah Naidu’s term expires on August 10. Dhankhar will be the country’s 14th Vice President.
