In a heartening initiative blending sport and rehabilitation, Mathura Jail has launched its own version of the Indian Premier League — the Jail Premier League (JPL) — to promote the physical and mental well-being of inmates.
Organised within the prison premises, the tournament featured eight teams formed from various barracks. The jail compound was transformed into a festive cricket ground, complete with balloons and enthusiastic cheers, as prisoners participated in league matches, semi-finals, and a final match — all echoing the excitement of the IPL.
According to Jail Superintendent Anshuman Garg, the tournament aimed to provide a sense of freedom and purpose to those living behind bars. “This is not just a final match, it is a victory of hope, a race of confidence. The ground is the same, but the players have changed — today every run, every catch, every win is an attempt to prove oneself again,” he said.
The league began in April 2025, featuring 12 league matches and 2 semi-finals, culminating in a thrilling final between the Knight Riders and the Capitals. The Knight Riders emerged victorious after winning the toss and putting on an impressive performance.
Individual accolades were also awarded — inmate Kaushal was named Player of the Match, Pankaj won the Purple Cap for best bowler, and Bhura received the Orange Cap for most runs scored. The event concluded with an emotional dance performance by an inmate, symbolizing the joy and hope sparked by the tournament.
A video shared by ANI captured the highlights, showing inmates playing with enthusiasm and guests handing out prizes to the winners.
With initiatives like the Jail Premier League, Mathura Jail is not only fostering sportsmanship but also offering a new lease on life to those often forgotten by society.
