Several pro-Kannada groups under the banner of Kannada Okkoota have called for a 12-hour bandh in Karnataka on Saturday, March 22, from 6 AM to 6 PM. The strike is in protest against the alleged assault on a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi.
The incident, which occurred last month, reportedly involved individuals linked to pro-Marathi organizations, further intensifying the longstanding linguistic dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra. In response, inter-state bus services between the two states were temporarily suspended.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the Karnataka government does not support the bandh, emphasizing that such a move could disrupt students’ exams and daily activities. “We will try to convince the organizers that this is not the right course of action,” he added.
Authorities have announced additional security measures in Belagavi and other sensitive areas to maintain law and order. Commuters, business owners, and students have been advised to plan accordingly, as the bandh is likely to impact regular activities across the state.
