Voting is underway across 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with ballots being cast until evening and counting slated for January 16, 2026.
Early figures from the state election commission show a modest turnout in Mumbai, with the BMC recording around 7% voter turnout in the initial hours of polling.
In Nagpur, a BJP candidate, Bhushan Shingne, sustained injuries after a confrontation with a large group late Wednesday night. Police said the incident occurred when Shingne went to a locality where he had been alerted to possible disruptions and alleged inducement of voters. He was reportedly attacked by more than 100 people and later taken to hospital. A police complaint has been lodged and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage as part of the investigation.
Across the state, key leaders and public figures participated in the democratic process. Voting began early in the morning, and security was tightened, especially in Mumbai, where police made elaborate arrangements to ensure smooth polling.
The elections are being seen as a litmus test for several political parties and alliances. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is competing fiercely against the Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS combine, the Nationalist Congress Party factions, the Congress, and other regional outfits. In Mumbai alone, around 1,700 candidates are contesting across 227 wards.
This poll holds particular importance as it’s the first major civic verdict since 2017 and could influence political dynamics ahead of future state and national contests.
Voters across Maharashtra are continuing to head to polling booths, with the day expected to provide the first indication of how city and regional power balances might shift following these local body elections.
