Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, criticised Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday for his “delayed” visit to the violent Manipur.Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, criticised Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday for his “delayed” visit to Manipur, a state that has been plagued by violence, stating that “the Centre should have gone to the state before,” but they “did not have the time.”
Amit Shah met with Kuki civil society groups in Churachandpur earlier in the day, the scene of some of the most recent violence. The West Bengal Chief Minister responded to this by saying, “I submitted a letter (to the Home Minister) yesterday expressing that I wish to go to Manipur for a day to meet the peace-loving people. He (Amit Shah) has travelled there today because I sent the letter yesterday.”I want to be with the Manipuris… I want to be with the state’s peace-loving citizens rather than breaking any protocol, she continued.
On Monday evening, Amit Shah came in Manipur and met with the chief minister, N Biren Singh, and other influential figures. As part of his initiative to bring peace to the violent state, he also attended meetings with stakeholders on Tuesday, beginning with a breakfast meeting with a group of women leaders.
