Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on Sunday, following months of ethnic violence in the northeastern state that has claimed over 250 lives and left thousands displaced since May 2023. In his resignation letter, Singh expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Manipur and acknowledged the support of the central government in various interventions and developmental initiatives aimed at protecting the interests of the state’s residents.
Singh, accompanied by state BJP president A. Sharda, BJP’s North East Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra, and at least 19 MLAs, submitted his resignation to state Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan. In his letter, Singh also reiterated that his government had been working diligently to restore peace in the violence-stricken region.
The resignation comes just a day after Singh emphasized his government’s ongoing efforts to bring about peace and unity among the people of Manipur. This turmoil has caused widespread unrest, with ethnic clashes escalating since May 2023.
In another development on the same day, unidentified gunmen attacked an India Reserve Battalion outpost in Thoubal district, looting arms, highlighting the continuing instability in the region.
