Mohan Majhi Government Delivers on Poll Promise: 65,000 Public Sector Vacancies to be Filled Soon.

Mohan Majhi Government Pledges to Fill 65,000 Vacancies in Public Sector: A Major Boost to Odisha's Employment Scenario.

In a significant move to address the unemployment crisis in Odisha, the Mohan Majhi government has prepared a blueprint to fill 65,000 vacancies in the public sector over the next two years. This initiative is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) poll pledge to fill 1.5 lakh vacancies within five years.

According to the latest data available on the recruitment web portal, there are 94,819 base-level vacancies in the public sector as of January 27, 2025. Out of these, 40,234 posts have been approved by the empowered committee for recruitment, while 33,420 posts have been sent to different recruiting agencies for conducting recruitment.

The departments with the highest number of vacancies are Health and Family Welfare, School and Mass Education, Home Department, Revenue and Disaster Management, and Higher Education. The Health and Family Welfare department has the highest number of vacancies, with 22,711 posts lying vacant against a sanctioned strength of 65,528. The School and Mass Education department closely follows, with 21,154 vacant posts out of 159,416 sanctioned posts.

The Home Department has 9,880 posts lying vacant against a sanctioned strength of 56,238, while the Revenue and Disaster Management department has 5,301 vacant posts. The Higher Education department has 4,733 vacant posts.

To tackle this issue, the General Administration and Public Grievance (GAPG) department has directed nodal officers of all departments to update vacancy positions so that those posts can be filled up. The government’s efforts are aimed at providing employment opportunities to the people of Odisha and addressing the unemployment crisis in the state.

The unemployment issue was a major concern in the 2024 elections, with the BJP criticizing the previous Naveen Patnaik government for not filling vacant positions under the pretext of maintaining financial prudence. The BJP’s election manifesto had promised to fill 1.5 lakh vacancies within five years, and the current government is working towards fulfilling this pledge.

In addition to filling vacancies, the state government is also focusing on creating new employment opportunities through investments. During the Utkarsh Odisha (Make-in-Odisha) conclave, the state received 593 investment proposals worth over ₹16.73 lakh crore, which could generate 12.88 lakh employment opportunities.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has expressed his commitment to providing employment opportunities to the people of Odisha. “We are working towards fulfilling our poll pledge of filling 1.5 lakh vacancies within five years,” he said. “In addition to filling vacancies, we are also focusing on creating new employment opportunities through investments.”

The Odisha government’s efforts to fill vacancies and create new employment opportunities are a welcome move, and are expected to bring relief to the thousands of unemployed youths in the state. As the government works towards fulfilling its poll pledge, the people of Odisha can expect a significant improvement in the employment scenario in the state
