About 11.30 am on Monday, residents in various areas of the Odisha districts of Bhadrak, Balasore, and Sundargarh became alarmed after hearing a strange booming sound. The confusing sound caused glass window panes in these regions to vibrate, and many residents hurried out of their homes out of fear that there would be an earthquake.
While the origin of the mysterious sound is yet to be ascertained, some described it as a sonic boom emitted by low-flying jet planes. It is worth mentioning here that people in Baripada in the Mayurbhanj district and Balasore district had a similar experience on February 27. Many had then thought that mining activities or the launch of missiles at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur might have been responsible for the booming sound, triggering speculation about a possible explosion or supersonic boom. However, nothing could be ascertained.
