In the enchanting realm where art meets reality, we sat down for a heart-to-heart with Partha Sarathi Ray, the luminary actor who has been casting a spell on the Odia film and television industry. As the aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped us, Partha shared the chapters of his journey, the nuances of his craft, and his unwavering commitment to steering the Odia entertainment scene toward uncharted territories. In this tête-à-tête, we delve into the facets of his versatile career, his philosophy on storytelling, and the pivotal role he envisions for Odia cinema in shaping cultural narratives.
Q: Partha, let’s start at the beginning. How did your journey into the Odia film and television industry unfold?
Partha chuckled, “It’s been quite a ride! I started in 2013 with ‘Nai Separai Kanak Gori,’ and the rest is history. From there to winning accolades for ‘Hello Arsi’ in 2018 and ‘Daalcheeni,’ it’s been a journey of diverse roles and experiences. Phalguna Chaitra as the academy has accepted our OST entry for the 96th Oscars, 2024.”
Q: You’ve ventured into both movies and serials. What’s the key difference for you between acting in films and television series? Any preferences?
“Movies and serials are like different flavours. Movies allow for in-depth exploration of characters, while serials have their charm with the longer narrative. I enjoy both, but if I had to pick, movies provide that intense, focused dive into a character that I find exhilarating.”
Q: Do you have a favourite genre or type of character to portray on screen?
With a thoughtful expression, “I don’t have a favourite genre per se. What matters is a compelling story and a character that challenges me. Whether it’s a love story like ‘Hello Arsi’ or a socio-psychodrama like ‘Boffin,’ each role brings its own excitement.”
Q: Speaking of roles, your performances have been impactful. How do you approach character development and preparation to make them stand out?
“Ah, that’s the heart of it. I believe in authenticity. For ‘Daalcheeni,’ I shed seven kilos and for Boffin, I lived in the character’s skin for five days without basic grooming. It’s about feeling the character’s essence, understanding their world, and bringing that honesty to the screen.”
Q: With a long and successful career, how do you stay motivated and fresh in your performances?
“Staying motivated is about constantly challenging myself. Every role, and every project is a new adventure. Plus, the support and appreciation from the audience keep the fire alive. It’s a beautiful cycle of passion and response.”
Q: What role do you think actors play in influencing society? Have you taken on socially relevant roles or projects?
“Absolutely, actors have a responsibility. I choose projects that contribute positively, whether it’s breaking stereotypes or shedding light on important issues. ‘Boffin,’ for instance, addressed crony capitalism and societal destruction. It’s about using the platform for a meaningful impact.”
Q: The Odia film and television industry has evolved. How do you see its future, and what changes do you expect?
“The industry is on an upward trajectory. Talented filmmakers are emerging with fresh ideas, and the audience is embracing diverse narratives. I see more quality cinema, more original stories, and perhaps even a broader international audience for Odia content.”
Q: Any advice for aspiring actors, especially those eyeing the Odia entertainment industry?
“Stay true to your craft. Learn, observe, and be patient. Success comes with hard work, not overnight. Also, never compromise on your principles. Quality over quantity always.”
Q: Lastly, what are your thoughts on the cultural significance of the Odia film and television industry?
“Odia cinema is a mirror reflecting our culture, our stories. It adds to the rich tapestry of Odisha’s cultural landscape. As artists, we’re contributors to that legacy, shaping narratives that resonate with our roots.”
As the interview wrapped up, Partha’s passion for his craft and commitment to meaningful storytelling lingered in the air. The rising star of Odia cinema, indeed, continues to illuminate the industry with his talent and dedication.
