It is a much debated fact that does all authors need to be born with a talent or the skill could be developed over the time . Let us know more about this topic from one of our very eminent authors, Author Shabana Anjum
Q1) We are glad to have you in our interview platform. Tell us a bit about your writing journey.
Ans : My writing journey started from the time, when I used to write diary. My teachers in Class 6, 7 encouraged us to write about our feelings in a diary every evening, at the end of the day. I religiously started writing, though not everyday, but whenever I would be sad or disappointed, I would pour out my pain in form of words in my diary. Gradually, with time, it took form of poems.
Facing lot of struggles in life and overcoming them one by one changed my outlook towards life. As a teacher and a counsellor , I started writing inspirational poems, for my students. It was then, that the idea of getting published triggered in my mind, when I saw the effect of my poems on some of my students. If my poems can brighten the lives of people, it will surely make my life worthwhile.
Q2) Do you feel that writing is a talent people are born with ,or you feel people can develop it over the time ?
Ans : I feel that both the factors are essential for writing. You need to have the inner spark of creating write-ups within you. Love for literature is not learnt, it is rather inbuilt. You require to be in love with verses and lines to write something yourself. Though the talent of writing is God gifted, it also needs grooming. You must have command over a language to express your thoughts in an organised manner. And this can be gained only by regular practice and continuous indulgence in your work. The more you write, the more effective your write-ups become.
Q3)What should be the responsibility of a teacher or guide to motivate students in the path of writing ? Do you feel school is the supportive platform for students ?
Ans : Teachers can motivate the students with a creative mind to enhance their writing skills by guiding them in their vocabulary, grammatical skills, comprehension and expression skills, etc. We all are aware that school curriculum includes composition as a part of English as well as other languages. This provides several chances for the budding writers to exhibit their writing talent. It is the duty of a good teacher to assess the skills of these students and encourage and guide them towards becoming wonderful writers.
School is definitely the supportive platform for students to display their talent and receive appreciation as well as proper guidance from the teachers. The confidence that is built in the school life does last for a lifetime.
Q4) As an author, tell us few tips on how should a person start writing or practise the skill.
Ans : The most useful tip that I would like to give to emerging writers is developing a reading habit. You should be an avid reader in order to enrich your vocabulary and sharpen your writing skills. However busy you are, make time to read, at least 20- 30 minutes every day. Reading is a habit that gives you many other benefits apart from escalating your writing skills.
Some other tips that I would like to give to budding writers are-
1)You must be honest in your writing. Write whatever you really feel and see how beautiful your write-ups turn out to be.
2)Writing also requires perseverance. Don’t get tired of your work till you reach your cherished goal.
3)Write everyday. Even four lines per day will do.
Keep writing, keep shining.
Q5) If you have to share your experience about writing in few words ,what would it be ?
Ans : Writing for me, is not only my passion, but also my antidepressant, anti-anxiety, etc. I may fail to express myself orally, but when it comes to writing, I feel more comfortable and confident. Whenever I feel low or stressed, I write to myself. The advice that I give to myself takes the form of a motivational poem. It is not that I am always in the inspiring mode. I too feel stressed out. I too lose hope and feel miserable. But the way I pick myself up and find my lost hope, is through writing.
Writing has made it possible for me to help myself as well as others to stand strong in the battles of life. With the help of my writing, I try to change the mind-set of the readers and leave a positive impact on their thinking process.
