Filmmaker Hansal Mehta is facing a last-minute hurdle just days before the world premiere of his much-awaited series Gandhi at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). With only 10 days to go, Mehta revealed that he and his team are still awaiting their Canadian visas, despite submitting passports nearly three weeks ago.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the filmmaker shared his concern publicly, writing:
“Can anybody help with visas at the Canadian High Commission in Delhi? We’re 10 days away from our world premiere at TIFF 2025 and no sign of our visas.”
Gandhi, starring Pratik Gandhi in the titular role, has already made history as the first Indian series to be selected for TIFF’s prestigious Primetime slate. The festival, celebrating its landmark 50th edition this year, runs from September 4 to 14 in Toronto.
Earlier this month, Mehta had described the selection as a proud moment for Indian storytelling. “An audacious dream, born of belief and perseverance, now steps onto the world stage… The first Indian series ever to be featured at TIFF. In its 50th year, this festival becomes the home for a story that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal,” he wrote.
For now, however, Mehta and his team are anxiously awaiting their travel documents, hoping the visa clearance comes through in time for their international debut.
