Odia scientist first from India to get IUPAC award

The news that Jyotirmayee Mohanty, the daughter-in-law of the village, would receive one of the 2023 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering awards from the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry), sent a wave of joy through the community of Titira under Balikuda block.

The honour has never before been given to a woman in the nation; Mohanty is a scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Institute in Mumbai. IUPAC had on February 11 released the names of 12 honorees in honour of International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The awards event, which was started as part of the celebrations for the International Year of Chemistry in 2011, is conducted annually to recognize and promote the contributions of female chemists and chemical engineers throughout the globe.

The Science and Engineering Research Board has awarded a fellowship to Mohanty for the first time. She was given the fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), an honour from the British Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), last year. She is the spouse of scientist Rasmiranjan Mohanty and the daughter of eminent doctor Dr Baikuntnath Patra of Chauliaganj in Cuttack.
