Odisha Govt To Provide Insurance Cover For Snake Handlers

For those in Odisha who handle snakes, there is good news. The state government is prepared to offer insurance coverage to people embarking on the risky work of snake rescue and release. Pramila Mallik, minister of revenue and disaster management, said this in Bhubaneswar. The state government’s Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department would pay the insurance cost for the snake handlers, according to her.

A proposal for training snake handlers and others involved in reptile rescue operations will be presented by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) in addition to the above. The type of the training and the money needed for it will be described in full in the proposal. The training program will then start, according to the Minister.

The Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department published a set of instructions for the rescue and release of snakes from regions frequented by people last month, it should be noted. The Additional Special Relief Commissioner, the PCCF of the Forest Department, the PCCF of the Wildlife Division, the Managing Director of OSDMA, all the RCCFs, Collectors, and DFOs have all received letters in this respect.

Only qualified snake handlers are permitted to take part in rescue and release operations, and they must precisely follow the established protocols in order to avoid penalties under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. Only when the presence of snakes threatens human lives, such as when they are discovered indoors or adjacent to a human settlement, would an intervention to save snakes be made. Whether the snakes are dangerous or not, the activity of snake rescue should be limited to situations in which the snakes have penetrated human habitations.
