Odisha Mining Corporation Surges Ahead: Iron Ore Output Hits 24.88 MT; Set for Record-Breaking Fiscal Year

For the 2025–2026 fiscal year, the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), a prestigious “Gold Category” State Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), reported a significant increase in mineral output. The company’s iron ore output as of December 31, 2025, was an astounding 24.88 million tonnes (MT), breaking prior records and setting the company up for an all-time high by the conclusion of the fiscal year.

The wholly-owned corporation of the Odisha government recorded a total mineral production of 29.03 MT by the end of December. This figure includes iron ore, chrome ore, bauxite, and other minerals, reinforcing OMC’s standing as one of India’s leading mining giants. The growth was most prominent in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025-26, where production soared to 12.94 MT—a 31.5% increase compared to the 9.84 MT recorded in the same period last year.

Q3 Production Breakdown:

  • Iron Ore: 11.23 MT

  • Bauxite: 1.15 MT

  • Chrome Ore: 0.49 MT

  • Other Minerals: 0.07 MT

Sudhanshu Mohan Samal, Managing Director of OMC, credited favorable circumstances and streamlined mining operations for this strong result. Although output has increased in all 19 mines that are now in operation, he stressed that safety is still the “utmost priority.” The use of technology-driven solutions is a major contributor to this achievement. OMC has used cutting-edge digital technologies, such as:

  • Logistics Management Systems and Fleet Management Systems for better dispatch planning.

  • Real-time monitoring of mining and transportation to minimize downtime.

  • Enhanced equipment utilization and quality control.

OMC is a vital component of Odisha’s economy as a profit-making PSU with no debt. The company has made enormous financial contributions to the state:

  • Dividend Paid (2024-25): Over ₹8,182 crore.

  • Annual Turnover (2024-25): ₹23,630 crore.

Beyond its financial statements, the company is stepping up its efforts to promote sustainable mining. This involves water conservation, afforestation, rigorous environmental compliance, scientific mining techniques, and gradual mine closure strategies. Industry watchers point out that OMC will undoubtedly write a historic year, surpassing the entire output of the previous fiscal year and establishing a new historical benchmark for mineral production in the state, if the current pace continues through the fourth quarter.
