Over 4.72 Cr E-Challans Issued For Traffic Rules Violation In 2022: Govt

According to information supplied by the Centre on Wednesday, both the quantity of e-challans issued for violating traffic laws and the amount of money collected from them have increased in recent years. The Union Road, Transport and Highways Ministry said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that more than 4.72 million e-challans worth almost Rs 7563.60 crore were issued in 2022. The amount of money collected in 2022 was close to Rs 2874.41 crore.

The total number of e-challans issued in 2021 was 4.21 crore, or around Rs 5318.70 crore. The amount of money received in 2021 was over Rs 2205.70 crore. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, Rule 167, according to the ministry, provide that a challan must be paid for within 90 days after its issuance; after that time, an extra notice of payment may be delivered by electronic means of communication.

Application for the offender’s license or registration of the vehicle, as applicable, mentioned in the challan will not be processed by the licensing authority or the registering authority if the challan has been open for longer than 90 days, with the exception of applications for permits, fitness certificates, and motor vehicle tax(es).
