On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu, who is spending three days in Odisha, went shopping and purchased six handwoven sarees for herself and an equal number of salwar suit pieces for her daughter.
Murmu, the first tribal chief to occupy this position, is renowned for her love of handlooms, which she frequently sports at formal occasions and gatherings. During her swearing-in event in July of last year, she made fashion history by wearing a Sonepuri Baadhi Kumbha Ganga Jamuna Silk Saree with Bomkai and Bandha (Ikat) work on the anchal.
The President chose some exceptional weaves this time from renowned weaver Chaturbhuj Meher. From the 35 weaves shown to her, she chose silk and cotton Ikat, Bomkai, Khandua, and Kotpad sarees, according to Kishore Meher, who represented Chaturbhuj.
He had been called three days prior by her office. “I brought the sarees to her chamber at Raj Bhavan with a friend, and she took 30 to 40 minutes to make the decision,” he claimed.
He said that Murmu had previously made multiple trips to the store while she was an Odisha minister and the governor of Jharkhand. He continued, “She typically chooses simple sarees and those with Kumbha designs.
