A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped by history sheeter Dattatraya Ramdas Gade in a bus at Pune’s Swargate station. Protests were triggered by the tragedy. A 26-year-old lady was allegedly raped by Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, a history sheeter who has been free on bail since 2019, on Tuesday morning inside a state transport bus that was stopped at Pune’s bustling Swargate bus station. The opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) staged a demonstration in response to the tragic incident, during which the building’s security office was vandalised. While Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader and Baramati Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti government, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said he has directed the Pune police commissioner to investigate the case and swiftly arrest the accused.
The woman, who works in the private medical sector, told the police that she was first hesitant to board the bus since its lights were off, but the man persuaded her that it was the correct vehicle. Then he followed her inside, raped her, and ran away.
According to the authorities, the accused also asked the victim not to tell anyone about the crime and threatened her. According to CCTV camera footage, the woman was seen walking towards the bus with the accused, Deputy Commissioner of Police Smartana Patil told reporters.
