In the lead-up to the vital panchayat elections in the state slated for July 8, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited some of the violent regions in the Cooch Behar district in north Bengal on Saturday.
Bose met the relatives of the two people who died in the political skirmishes in June during his visit. In order to meet with the individuals hurt during the conflicts, he also went to a hospital.
Due to political conflicts in the state, Sambhu Das, the brother-in-law of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) panchayat candidate, was slain on June 17, and Babu Haque, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker, was shot and died last week.Another local BJP politician, Prasanta Basunia, was reportedly shot and killed in the area in June. On Saturday, Bose visited with Das and Basunia’s relatives.
At the circuit house where the governor had set up shop earlier in the day, candidates and staff from opposition parties such as the BJP, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Congress lined up. He addressed the candidates after they expressed concern about violent happenings in Cooch Behar. Some claimed that TMC employees were preventing them from running for office before the election.
Along with five other BJP lawmakers, Nisith Pramanik, a minister for the Union, met with Bose earlier in the day.
