Rahul Gandhi Says Waqf Bill Targets Muslims, Warns of Precedent for Other Communities

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has strongly criticized the recently passed Waqf Bill, alleging that it targets the Muslim community and sets a dangerous precedent that could be used to target other religious minorities in the future.

The bill, which was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 128 votes in favor and 95 against—after being cleared by the Lok Sabha on April 3—has drawn criticism from opposition parties, particularly the Congress.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi shared an article that claimed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had now shifted its focus to Catholic Church lands following the passage of the Waqf Bill. “I had said that the Waqf Bill attacks Muslims now but sets a precedent to target other communities in the future. It didn’t take long for the RSS to turn its attention to Christians,” Gandhi posted.

He further emphasized the importance of the Constitution in protecting the rights of all communities, stating, “The Constitution is the only shield that protects our people from such attacks — and it is our collective duty to defend it.”

Gandhi had earlier voiced similar concerns in Parliament, warning that the bill is “an attack on the Constitution by the RSS, BJP, and their allies,” and said it is aimed at Muslims today but could be used against other communities tomorrow.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal also weighed in, sharing another article pointing out that the Catholic Church now holds more land than the Waqf Board. “As predicted, first one minority targeted, now onto the next,” Venugopal wrote.

The Waqf Bill has become a flashpoint in Parliament and beyond, with critics warning that it could lead to broader implications for minority rights and religious freedoms in India.
