BHUBANESWAR: 22 coaches of the 19168 Sabarmati Express derailed near Govindpuri station in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, during the early hours of Saturday. The train, which was traveling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad, went off the tracks at around 2:30 am. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
Immediately following the derailment, rescue and relief operations were launched. An eight-coach MEMU train was dispatched from Kanpur at 5:21 am to transport the stranded passengers back to the city.
Additionally, buses were sent to the site to ensure that all passengers could continue their journeys. Seven trains were canceled, and three others were diverted to manage the disruption caused by the derailment.Railway officials have been closely monitoring the situation.
Deepak Kumar, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Jhansi Division, confirmed that the passengers were safely transported back to Kanpur and that another train had been arranged to take them to their respective destinations.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed the incident, revealing that the derailment was likely caused by an obstruction on the tracks.
He noted that “sharp hit marks” were found on the engine of the Sabarmati Express, suggesting that the train struck an object placed on the tracks. Vaishnaw assured the public that evidence had been preserved and that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Uttar Pradesh police were actively investigating the matter.
“The engine of Sabarmati Express (Varanasi to Ahmedabad) hit an object placed on the track and derailed near Kanpur at 02:35 am today.
Sharp hit marks are observed. Evidence is protected. IB and UP police are also working on it. No injuries to passengers or staff. A train has been arranged for passengers to continue their journey to Ahmedabad,” Vaishnaw posted on X.
