A Delhi Court on Monday charged the controversial JNU student Sharjeel Imam on the grounds of sedition. Sharjeel apparently made an inflammatory speech on Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Additional sessions judge Amitabh Rawat framed the charges under Sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, etc.), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 13 (punishment for unlawful activities) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Way back in 2020, an FIR was lodged against Sharjeel at the crime branch police station under Section 124-(A), 153A, 505 of the IPC with regard to speeches made in the Jamia area on December 13, 2019. The said speech was shared on social media. Another speech was uploaded on Twitter and different websites in which he is seen addressing a gathering at Aligarh Muslim University.
