South Bengal areas are under a heat wave warning as the temperature rises above 40 °C

The Regional Meteorological Centre’s director in Kolkata, Sanjib Bandopadhyay, reported that the temperature up until Thursday afternoon had been three to five degrees above average.As the temperature surpassed 40°C across the majority of South Bengal districts on Thursday, including the metropolis of Kolkata, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave alert.The Regional Meteorological Centre’s director in Kolkata, Sanjib Bandopadhyay, reported that the temperature up until Thursday afternoon had been three to five degrees above average.

Bandopadhyay stated, “South Bengal districts are experiencing conditions similar to a heat wave. Up to April 17, the temperature could increase by one to two additional degrees. Although it is solely a technical problem, in some places the temperature may be one or two degrees below what is needed to qualify as a heat wave.The state department of education also declared that summer vacation would begin in all Bengali schools on May 2, with the exception of those in the steep Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of north Bengal.The decree from the secretary of the school education department stated that the vacation would last “until further instructions” were given.
