Dr. Jayesh Sharma, an oncologist specializing in breast and oral cancer, took to Instagram recently to clarify the age-old debate on which cooking oil is healthiest. In his informative post, Dr. Sharma emphasized the importance of moderation when using oils, as excess consumption of any oil can negatively affect heart health. While addressing common misconceptions, the doctor reassured viewers that mustard oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and anti-inflammatory agents, is beneficial for heart health. Despite concerns over the smoke produced when heating mustard oil, Dr. Sharma assured followers that it poses no harm when used appropriately. He also highlighted the advantages of peanut oil, commonly used in Western India, which contains anti-inflammatory properties and can help prevent cancer.
In contrast, Dr. Sharma urged caution when using palm oil, suggesting it should be avoided due to its potential health risks. He also discussed the benefits of rice bran oil in moderation, noting that while it is good for heart health, it should not be heated to very high temperatures. Dr. Sharma further addressed the misconception surrounding ghee, which gained a bad reputation in the 90s due to the inclusion of dalda, a harmful ingredient. He clarified that ghee, when consumed in moderation, can be a healthy addition to one’s diet, particularly for flavoring and in sweets.
