U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday welcomed the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan, following four days of escalating hostilities triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump praised the leadership of both nations and expressed his intention to deepen trade ties and assist in finding a resolution to the long-standing Kashmir conflict.
“I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan,” Trump said, acknowledging their decision to end military actions. He added that their restraint had potentially prevented a catastrophic loss of life, stating, “Millions of good and innocent people could have died!”
Trump credited U.S. diplomacy for playing a role in the ceasefire and expressed pride in contributing to what he called a “historic and heroic decision.” He further announced plans to substantially increase trade with both countries, despite trade not being discussed during the ceasefire negotiations.
“Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir,” Trump added, signaling potential U.S. involvement in future peace talks.
While Trump claimed U.S.-mediated talks helped facilitate the ceasefire, India maintained that the understanding was reached through direct communication with Pakistan.
The latest developments come amid hopes that diplomatic efforts can replace rising tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
