The University Grants Commission (UGC) granted recognition to Kalahandi University, Bhawanipatna, under Section 2(F) of the UGC Act, 1956, and included the institution in its list of universities.

As per the reports, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan posted the UGC letter to the university and quoted- “Kalahandi MP Basanta Panda had informed me about the need for the recognition. The UGC has come up with the notification for the benefit of the students of the region.”

Further, Pradhan added that once the university completes all formalities, it will receive a central grant which will further help to strengthen its infrastructure.  The university shall operate only within the territorial jurisdiction allotted to it under its Act and in no case beyond the territory of the state. The University is not allowed to start on off-campus centres beyond the jurisdiction as provided in the Act and under no circumstances beyond the state.
