On October 28 and 29, 2022, India will host a special meeting of the UN Security Council’s Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) in Mumbai and Delhi. The summit’s main topic will be “Countering the exploitation of new and emerging technology for terrorist goals.” The employment of drones in modern terrorism and the financing of terrorists through cryptocurrency will also be covered by the panel.
India’s representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, outlined the areas of attention while stressing that this is the first time in seven years that the special meeting is being conducted outside of New York. She stated during a briefing in New Delhi that “They’ll pay close attention to the three key technologies that are rapidly developing, becoming more widely used by Member States, and posing a growing threat of being used for terrorist activities. The internet, which includes social media, comes in first, followed by new payment methods and fundraising techniques, unmanned aerial systems, and last, troops.”
The meeting’s main focus, according to Sanjay Verma, secretary of state for external affairs, will be “countering the use of new and emerging technology for terrorist goals.” It will start with a homage to terrorism victims, he continued.James Cleverly, the foreign secretary of the United Kingdom, will attend the summit in India.
Sanjay Verma, the external affairs secretary, mentioned Mumbai’s economic improvement in recent years, especially after what it went through in 2008, as the reason the committee decided to convene the meeting there.
“A city that, in terms of recent economic progress, best represents India. The CTC’s decision to begin its discussions in Mumbai alone sends a message, according to the senior MEA source.
