Pakistan defeated Ireland by three wickets to conclude their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. Although the 2009 winners had a triumphant finale to a somewhat unremarkable campaign, Pakistan needed over 19 overs to chase down a pitiful 107 target in Lauderhill. Ireland was bowled out for 32/6 in the seventh over after opting to bat first. Ireland then managed to reach triple figures through Gareth Delany and Josh Little. Ireland reached a score of 106/9 thanks to the last wicket partnership of Little and Ben While, who survived six overs.
Pakistan reached 111/7 in 18.5 overs thanks to the unbeaten 32 in 34 balls made by captain Babar Azam, who then led the chase. Former India batsman Virender Sehwag stated on Cricbuzz, “We didn’t think that (Ireland) would reach 106 runs and we also didn’t think that Pakistan would take 19 overs to chase that down.””I’m not sure what Pakistan has done in this situation. Sure, they won, but only after they had forced them to chase from 32/6 to 106. It wasn’t like the pitch was particularly challenging or that Ireland’s bowling was so excellent that you had to play really carefully when chasing.
The campaign of Pakistan never really got going. They began with an unexpected defeat to co-hosts USA in a contest that ended in the Super Over. In their subsequent match against India, Pakistan appeared to be leading for a significant portion of their chase but ultimately lost by six runs. After the USA’s match versus Ireland was cancelled, they were then eliminated.Sehwag acknowledged that he is not aware of any issues within their team, but he stated that issues in the locker room do contribute to subpar performances on the pitch. “This is the reason they are said to as unpredictable; you can never be sure how well they will perform. They have experienced poverty more frequently this World Cup. I’m not sure what
