Ministry of Defense orders AFMS to recruit 400 retired medical officers of AMC, SSC

The Ministry of Defense on Sunday said it had instructed the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) to recruit 400 retired medical officers from the Military Medical Corps (MMC) and the Short Service Commission (SSC). India has been badly affected by the second wave of the coronavirus infection, and many states have shortage of health workers, vaccines, oxygen, medicine and beds.

A statement from the Ministry of Defense said, “Under the Tour of Duty Scheme, 400 ex-AMC or SSC medical personnel are expected to be recruited on a contractual basis for 11 months, with services completed between 2017 and 2021.”

It stipulates that these medical officers will be paid a certain amount per month, which will be deducted from the basic pension taken during retirement.

The agreement states that the amount will remain unchanged and no other benefits will be given. Medical officers to be admitted must be medically fit, according to the general public.

To combat the second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, AFMS has already deployed additional doctors, including specialists, super specialists and paramedics, to various hospitals. The expansion of services for AFMS, SSC doctors has been extended to December 31, with an increase of 238 doctors.
