In the ‘period of equality,’ the International Cricket Council (ICC) declared equal prize money for men’s and women’s teams at ICC events on Thursday. Additionally, the ICC made adjustments to the Test cricket over-rate sanctions. According to an official release from ICC, “The decision was made during the ICC Annual Conference in Durban, South Africa and assures the ICC Board met its goal to reach prize money equity by 2030 far ahead of schedule.
“This is a significant moment in the history of our sport, and I am delighted that men’s and women’s cricketers competing at ICC global events will now be rewarded equally,” said ICC Chairman Greg Barclay in a statement. Now, teams will be awarded the same amount for winning a match at such events as well as the same prize money for placing in a similar place at similar competitions.
At its international competitions, the ICC will begin awarding the same prize money to the winners and runner-up teams in the men’s and women’s divisions.
This might be a game-changer for women’s cricket since it will encourage more people to play the sport professionally. The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, as well as Twenty20 World Cups and Under-19 competitions, will now carry the same prize money as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.Australia brought home $1 million in prize money for winning the women’s Twenty20 World Cup earlier this year, while South Africa, who finished in second place, received $500,000.
