The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar successfully completed a trial of drone health service delivery on Tuesday, marking a first for the state of Odisha. As part of the trial run, a blood unit from AIIMS Bhubaneswar was given to a hospital in Tangi. The drone that is being used weighs 12 kg and has the capacity to transport 2 to 5 kg of vital medical kits, blood units, and medications. Given that Odisha is prone to natural disasters, it will be very helpful to use drones to deliver medical supplies to isolated and remote areas after floods and storms.
According to senior hospital officials, the blood unit was delivered to Tangi from AIIMS Bhubaneswar by drone in 37 minutes. The drone has a top speed of ninety kilometers per hour. GPS was used to track and control the drone. The Air Traffic Control (ATC) Bhubaneswar permission required for today’s drone trial run was secured.
“AIIMS Bhubaneswar used drones to deliver health services for the first time. We are experimenting and investigating the services that the technology can provide. This initiative is being carried out in accordance with the directive from the Health Ministry. stated Ashutosh Biswas, director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Biswas further informed that drones can be useful in providing better services in emergencies and for disaster management during cyclones and floods where there are road connectivity issues.
