The ruling party in Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), received donations of Rs 1,020 crore in five years, of which Rs 944.5 crore were paid through electoral bonds between July 16, 2018, and July 15, 2023.
The Election Commission disclosed the additional material on Sunday. It was originally presented in sealed cover to the Supreme Court. It states that the regional party redeemed Rs 244 crore between July 7, 2018, and April 5, 2019. It received 214 bonds of Rs 1 crore, 299 bonds worth Rs 10 lakh, and 10 bonds worth Rs 1 lakh throughout the course of these nine months. Following the Supreme Court’s temporary injunction on April 12, 2019, the Naveen Patnaik-led party submitted the details of these bonds on June 20, 2019, however it has not disclosed the contributors’ information.
A number of Odisha-based enterprises involved in infrastructure, mining, metals, and other related industries are listed as donors. Among them are the second-highest bond buyer, Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd; Utkal Alumina International Ltd; Jindal Steel and Power Ltd; Vedanta Ltd; Rungta Sons Pvt Ltd; Essel Mining and Industries Ltd; Grasim Industries Ltd; Thriveni Earth Movers Pvt Ltd; M/S SN Mohanty; Indrani Patnaik; Misrilall Mines Pvt Ltd; Orissa Metaliks Pvt Ltd; Shree Jagannath Steels and Power Ltd; Ramco Cements Ltd; JK Paper Ltd; and Welspun Group (all in alphabetical order).
