While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not released a forecast or revealed information regarding cyclone formation, rumors about a cyclone striking the Bay of Bengal coast of India are circulating like wildfire in Odisha. Sources claim that when Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, posted something on his X handle, cyclone rumors started to circulate.
“The restricting factor could be a quick northward progression of the monsoon, suppressing the vertical formation of the cyclone. If that’s the case, this will end up as a monsoon depression bringing rain. Otherwise, it could develop into a weak cyclone of short duration,” tweeted Roxy Mathew Koll.
The national weather forecaster clarified that while there is still uncertainty over the creation of a cyclone, its likelihood remains uncertain. The depression is probably going to deepen into one, but the cyclone picture won’t show up until the system has developed.
Furthermore, IMD stated that low pressure will have little effect in Odisha. The regional weather service has forecast that a low-pressure area that has formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal coast will most likely concentrate into a depression over the central regions of the Bay on May 24. As a result of its effects, the sea state is predicted to be severe to very rough over the central and adjacent south Bay of Bengal starting on May 23 and moderate to rough over the southwest Bay of Bengal on May 22. On May 24 and 25, numerous locations in North Odisha could have moderate to heavy rainfall, according to meteorological agencies, while some areas of Balasore could see significant rainfall of seven to eleven centimetres.
