PSUs in the Coal Sector Increase Healthcare Efforts for the Poor With An Rs. 800 Crore CSR Budget

According to a Coal Ministry statement released on Monday, Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries, NLCIL, are having a significant positive impact on community well-being. Each year, CIL commits about Rs 800 crore to CSR initiatives pertaining to women’s empowerment, healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. The successful completion of 500 bone marrow transplants (BMTs) has marked a critical milestone for CIL’s main health initiative, the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY). 356 disadvantaged children in India would benefit from this program, which offers financial support of up to Rs 10 lakh per patient for the treatment of Thalassemia Major and Aplastic Anemia.

The program, which was introduced in 2017, helps families whose yearly income is less than Rs 8 lakh. TBSY, which has invested Rs 70 crore, has been recognized with “The Green Environment Award” and is still providing essential financial assistance for medical treatments via both physical and online applications. Similarly, Coal India Limited created Project Nanha Sa Dil to address the pressing need for interventions related to congenital heart disease (CHD). The goal of this project is to screen about 18,000 kids in Jharkhand’s village and district camps for CHD. The project’s objectives are to train more than 50 young professionals in pediatric cardiac care and treat 500 children with surgical or catheter-based therapies. The initiative, which has been funded at Rs 9.37 crore, will first run in four districts with plans for additional expansion.

By opening a dialysis center at Government Hospital in Cuddalore, NLCIL has also greatly improved access to healthcare. By offering 13,000 dialysis cycles a year, this program increases the accessibility of vital medical care for people in the area. NLCIL and its joint ventures established 28 Medical Oxygen Plants with a combined capacity of 2,500 beds in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu in response to the urgent need for medical oxygen during the pandemic. This endeavor has significantly reinforced the country’s healthcare system.

Among the notable CSR initiatives related to health that the coal sector central public sector firms have undertaken are the building of Premashralay, which is a home established in Kolkata for outpatients receiving cancer treatment. Using mobile units, the provision of mobile healthcare services is another initiative to assist marginalized communities. In addition, the Ranchi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre offers cancer care assistance, which includes working in partnership with Tata Cancer Care to identify and cure cancer.
