Under the OERC Green Energy Open Access Regulations, 2023, GRIDCO and M/s Avaada Green H2 Pvt Ltd. inked a historic agreement, marking a major step forward in Odisha’s green energy goals. An official news release states that the arrangement supports Avaada’s planned 0.5 MTPA Green Ammonia Plant in Gopalpur, Ganjam, by providing a 300 MW Green Power Banking Facility. The plant will begin operations on December 31, 2028, and run for 25 years.
With its favorable policy environment, strong green power infrastructure, developed seaports, and rising domestic demand for green hydrogen and ammonia in sectors like fertilizers, steel, metals, and oil refineries, Odisha is the leading state in India for the development of these technologies, as this agreement highlights. Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister-turned-Energy Minister, spoke at the event and emphasized Odisha’s advancements in the green energy space.
He stated, “So far, we have approved 14 Green Hydrogen/Ammonia Projects in the state, with a proposed investment of approximately Rs. 2 Lakh Crores. These projects are expected to generate employment opportunities for 22,000 people.”
The Deputy Chief Minister underlined that, in addition to water, renewable energy is essential for the generation of ammonia and green hydrogen. “By providing opportunities and incentives for the establishment of renewable energy (RE) projects, Odisha has established a favorable ecosystem,” he continued. We have included facilities for Green Energy Banking in recognition of the sporadic nature of RE power generation, guaranteeing a continuous supply of green electricity to producers of ammonia and hydrogen. Odisha is really one of the few states in the nation that has put such a system in place. By establishing Odisha as a center for the green hydrogen and ammonia industries, this agreement further solidifies the state’s status as a pioneer in the development of sustainable energy.
