A 50-year-old Indian national, Chandra Mouli “Bob” Nagamallaiah, was brutally beheaded at the Downtown Suites motel in Dallas on Wednesday morning following a dispute with a colleague over a malfunctioning washing machine.
Nagamallaiah, originally from Karnataka, worked as the motel manager. The attack unfolded in front of his wife and 18-year-old son, who desperately tried to protect him.
Police have arrested 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez and charged him with capital murder. He remains in custody without bond and, if convicted, could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.
According to the Dallas Police Department, the incident began when Nagamallaiah instructed Cobos-Martinez and another motel worker not to use the faulty washing machine. When Nagamallaiah asked another person to translate his instructions instead of addressing Cobos-Martinez directly, the suspect reportedly became enraged. Surveillance footage later showed Cobos-Martinez leaving, returning with a machete, and attacking Nagamallaiah, who attempted to flee toward the motel office where his family was present.
Investigators revealed that Cobos-Martinez has a prior criminal record in Houston, including arrests for auto theft and assault.
Friends and relatives described Nagamallaiah as a kind and caring man devoted to his family. The Indian community in Dallas has rallied around his grieving wife and son, launching a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses, immediate living costs, and the son’s college education. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday.
