The Call of Destiny: Choosing the Path of the Mind Born into a business family where dining table conversations revolved around commerce, Dr. Nidhi Garg seemed destined for the corporate world. However, destiny had a different blueprint; she discovered a profound passion for psychology and decided to dedicate her life to understanding the human mind. Today, she is an award-winning Clinical and Counselling Psychologist, Life Coach, Motivational Speaker, and Corporate Wellness Expert with over a decade of rich experience. As the founder of Sabrr Heal, she has built a diverse career spanning hospitals, universities, corporates, and social impact organizations.

Bridging Psychology and Management Dr. Garg possesses a unique professional blend, holding both an M.A. in Counselling Psychology & a PhD in Management (HR). This dual academic foundation allows her to deeply understand organizational structures and the exact sources of workplace stress. Her doctoral research focused specifically on the mental well-being of IT professionals in Bhubaneswar, shedding light on the immense pressure of tight deadlines, night shifts, and high competition in the private sector. Through her research and clinical practice, she highlights how workplace stress varies by life stage. While middle-aged professionals struggle with the heavy double-burden of caring for aging parents, raising children, and managing financial commitments, younger students and professionals face intense anxiety, digital distractions, & difficulties adapting to new cultural environments.

.

On the Frontlines of Crisis: The Reality of Mental Health Support As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Garg’s commitment is absolute, often operating on the frontlines of emotional crises. Her work is far from a standard 9-to-5 job; she acts as an empathetic facilitator for people at their lowest points, sometimes handling intense, late-night suicidal calls at 2:00 AM. She firmly believes that constant, back-to-back counseling without personal balance can lead to severe burnout.

To protect her own mental well-being, she pursues a highly multi-faceted life, She channels her creativity into writing, serves as a speaker and moderator in major literary festivals—such as the Kalinga Literary Festival, SOA Literature Festival, and Toshali Literature Festival – & regularly interacts with young minds as a visiting faculty member at prestigious institutions like NIFT Bhubaneswar, Xavier University, and Amity University.  Smashing the Stigma & Living Authentically One of Dr. Garg’s core missions is dismantling the deep-rooted societal stigma surrounding mental health in India. She notes that individuals often delay seeking help for months or even years, wearing “masks” of external happiness to hide deep marital or personal pain from parental or societal judgment.

To combat this, Dr. Garg champions the concept of a “Mental Health First Aid Kit”, urging people to recognize early warning signs of distress—such as drops in daily functioning, persistent irritability, sleep or appetite disruptions, and an inability to fight back tears. Through her extensive corporate wellness coaching (including at ESSPL), workshops (such as stress management training for GST & Customs), & community outreach, she teaches that true resilience is not about running away (flight) but choosing to face challenges and rise back up (fight).

Dr. Nidhi Garg’s Guide to Mental Health First Aid: Mental health first aid is the emotional equivalent of physical first aid. It is not about diagnosing or fixing a person—it is about providing immediate support, safety, and hope until they are able to receive the help they need. Just as every home has a physical first aid box, every individual should carry a Mental Health First Aid Kit within themselves.

CARES – A simple five-step framework everyone can remember:

  • C — Connect with Compassion: Be present. Listen without judging, interrupting, or rushing to give solutions. Sometimes the greatest gift you can offer is your undivided attention.
  • A — Acknowledge and Validate Feelings: Let the person know that their emotions are real and important. A simple “I hear you” or “I’m here for you” can reduce feelings of isolation.
  • R — Recognize Warning Signs: Notice changes such as withdrawal from loved ones, persistent sadness, hopelessness, anxiety, sudden mood swings, substance abuse, or any talk of self-harm or suicide. Early recognition can save lives.
  • E — Encourage Professional Help: Normalize seeking support from a psychologist or psychiatrist, just as we seek medical care for physical illnesses. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  • S — Stay Connected: Mental health support does not end after one conversation. Keep checking in, offer reassurance, and remind the person that they do not have to face their struggles alone.

The Invisible Essentials in Every Mental Health First Aid Kit:

  • Empathy instead of sympathy
  • Patience instead of pressure
  • Hope instead of hopelessness
  • A Safe Space where people feel heard, respected, and accepted
  • Self-care for the Caregiver, because you cannot pour from an empty cup

A Message she wants everyone to remember: “A mental health first aid kit does not contain medicines—it contains humanity. We do not need to have all the answers. Our presence, patience, compassion, and willingness to listen can become the first step in someone’s healing journey.”
