Government to soon raise the minimum legal age of marriage for women to 21 years

The minimum age for marriage of young men and women of all religions should be 21 years. An appeal has been made to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has accepted it and issued a notice to the central government. The next hearing in the case is set for next week after the central government responded.

The petitioner further said that the petitions filed in the Rajasthan and Delhi High Courts should be transferred to the Supreme Court for the marriage age of 21 years. The Center has also been asked to respond in this regard. Different judgments are likely to come as there are cases in different courts. So the Supreme Court wants to hear it simultaneously. The bench, headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, issued the notice after hearing the case.

BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay has applied for a petition over marriage age of 21-years. Upadhyay’s plea was heard by the Delhi High Court in August 2016 and the Center was notified. The Rajasthan High Court also heard the case and sought a reply from the central government.

Notably, the minimum age of marriage for a girl in the country is now 18 years, while the age of marriage for a boy is 21 years.
