As part of a nationwide series of events showcasing India’s leadership in big cat conservation and the goals of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) will host a thematic program on leopard conservation and biodiversity in Bhubaneswar. The Bhubaneswar event, which is planned in conjunction with the International Day for Biological Diversity, will highlight Odisha’s efforts to conserve biodiversity and concentrate on the cohabitation of humans and leopards in human-dominated environments.
The Ministry claims that the national initiatives will highlight conservation efforts pertaining to the five main wild big cat species in India: tigers, Asiatic lions, leopards, snow leopards, and cheetahs. They will also highlight the successes, difficulties, and cooperative efforts carried out by the federal government and state governments. In addition to Bhubaneswar, thematic events will be held for the protection of Asiatic lions in Gir, Gujarat; tigers in Chandrapur, Maharashtra; snow leopards in Gangtok, Sikkim; and cheetahs in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
The MoEFCC said the pre-summit programmes are aimed at promoting awareness, strengthening stakeholder engagement and showcasing India’s conservation successes under flagship initiatives that led to the establishment of the IBCA following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for global cooperation in big cat conservation.
