By becoming the first transgender lawyer of Odisha, Salma begum has not only overcome stereotypes but broke many useless taboo barriers which are there for decades. This achievement will further normalize the fact that transgenders are not different species. They are humans and should be treated and respected as humans.
Salma Begum, earlier known as Mohammad Salim completed her graduation in the science stream and recently got a bar license to practice in Barbil Court. The Barbil Bar Association has announced support and assured to extend all possible assistance to Salma to make a new beginning. Salma credits transgender leaders Meera Parida, Megha, and Sadhana for bringing a change in her mindset, breaking all shackles, and dreaming for a better life like others in society.
“I had got inspired by Meera, Megha, and other leaders fighting for transgender rights. I want to take admissions in LLM next year,” said Salma. Salma is now getting trained and practicing under advocate Manisha Chaurasia. “It is really a proud feeling for me as Salma is the first transgender lawyer. I will extend my full cooperation,” said Chaurasia.
Akshay Dhir, secretary of Barbil Bar Association said, “Salma is Odisha’s pride. She had submitted her application and joined the Barbil Bar Association.” Senior lawyer Dilip Kumar Rout said, “It is now a collective onus to see that Salma continues to move ahead in life and career.”
