A climate-driven drought catastrophe has affected 63% of the land in the European Union and the United Kingdom, leaving thousands of dead fish in the dried-up riverbeds and birds flying thirsty. This week, the Joint Research Center of the European Commission issued a warning that the drought situation will likely worsen and could affect 47% of the continent. With no rain in the previous two months, Western, Central, and Southern Europe are experiencing a record-breaking dry spell. According to projections, the dry spell is set to endure for the foreseeable future, making this the worst drought in 500 years, according to experts.Water providers which want to prohibit consumers from using hosepipes and washing cars with tap water may be able to implement water restriction more easily across the UK. At this point, more harsh measures, such as a ban on sprinkler usage and restrictions on cleaning windows, cars, and buildings, can also be implemented. According to meteorologist Peter Hoffmann of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in close proximity to Berlin, the prolonged dry weather that has resulted from changes in global weather systems is to blame for the current predicament.Simply put, we experience it more during the summer, he explained. “But in reality, the drought worsens throughout the year.”
